Even now, in remote geographies, teaching methodologies are traditional, and rote learning is a predominant way children learn. This makes attending school a boring exercise and devoid of context, thus pushing children out of school as they progress into upper grades. We are working to develop the government primary school as a conducive learning and discourse space for children and bring about systemic change in education.
In this school learning program, we work with our partner schools through
- Regular class practices- We are working with teachers in a language class and collaboratively preparing a teaching plan for a lesson from the course book, using children's literature to prepare the classroom practices according to the ability of the children and demonstrating how to manage the class so that each child is engaged.
- Exposure to quality children's literature- We establish reading corners stocked with books and learning materials, conduct various library activities to spark interest in reading children's literature, and give children independent time to read. These activities and the print-rich environment will scaffold the development of a child's foundational language.
- Thematic workshops for children- We facilitate monthly workshops to support children's language development. i.e. how to create a wall magazine, book reviews, etc.
- Organising academic sessions for teachers- Conduct quarterly sessions on language education, library activities, perspectives of education, classroom management, etc. Also, motivate teachers to form a learning circle.
