For lakhs of students in public schools, the exposure to literature is limited only to textbooks that are not of excellent quality and are devoid of context. In this scenario expecting a child to be an active reader and creative is farfetched esp. for those coming from underserved communities who are first-generation schoolgoers. It does not help them to be expressive and exposed to diverse ideas. Introducing libraries in the early grades can not only fill this gap but can also become the centre of an independent learning environment.
